The TaylorActive Project: Investigating the effectiveness of tailored videos in promoting physical activity via the Internet.

Thank you for your interest in participating in the TaylorActive Project. This research is being conducted in Australia by a research team from CQUniversity Australia, University of Newcastle and the University of Alberta.

What is the study about?

To prevent chronic disease, 30 minutes a day of moderate intensity physical activity has substantial positive effects. Yet, only 46% of Australians meet the National Physical Activity Guidelines which is costing Australia an estimated $1.6 billion in health care costs every year.

Our research team have developed the TaylorActive Project to assess the effectiveness of an internet delivered, video tailoring based health promotion program for improving physical activity habits of Australian adults. TaylorActive will allow you to enter your physical activity onto the website and receive personally tailored advice that will encourage you to improve your physical activity routine and improve your health.

To participate in the TaylorActive Project you need to be over the age of 18, live in Australia, have access to broadband internet, not be meeting the current National Physical Activity Guidelines and be able to increase your physical activity levels.

If you are eligible and agree to participate in the TaylorActive Project, you will be randomly assigned to one of three groups:

  • Group 1 – General access to the TaylorActive website.
  • Group 2 – General access to the TaylorActive website and text tailored physical activity advice.
  • Group 3 – General access to the TaylorActive website and video tailored physical activity advice.

What does the study involve?

The TaylorActive Project is a 9 month project and to participate you need to be willing to increase your physical activity. If you decide to participate we will ask you to wear an Actigraph - a small battery operated, waist worn device, attached to a belt that measures periods of movement to tell us how much physical activity you have been doing, for seven days.

After wearing the Actigraph, you will also complete a telephone survey, which will be repeated again at 3 and 9 months. The survey will ask you some background information about yourself, your physical activity levels and what you think of the intervention you are using. Each survey will take approximately 30 minutes and we will provide you with an incentive, upon completion at each time point.

Will the study benefit you?

We cannot promise that you will receive any benefits from participating in the TaylorActive Project. However, a desired outcome of this research is to increase the physical activity levels among all participants. Increased levels of physical activity may reduce your risk of developing diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and overweight and obesity.

Will the study involve any risks or discomfort for you?

There are no health related risks associated with participating in this research. While we are asking you to increase your physical activity, you should continue to be active at a pace that you are comfortable with. There are some time costs associated with participating in this research, when completing the telephone surveys and when wearing the Actigraph.

How is this study being paid for?

The TaylorActive Project is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia.

Will anyone else know the results? How will the results be disseminated?

If you consent to participate in the TaylorActive Project by giving consent, any information that is collected through the project and that can personally identify you will be confidential. The information you provide will be stored in locked filing cabinets and in password protected files so only research staff will have access to the information. In any publication or report, information will be provided in such a way that you cannot be identified. We plan to publish the results in scientific literature and provide reports to interested parties. Information from this research will also be available in the form of a plain English statement of the summarised findings to project participants.

What we would like you to do:

If you agree to participate in the TaylorActive Project, we would like you to:

  • Give consent electronically to participate in the TaylorActive project.
  • Participate by wearing an Actigraph for seven consecutive days and completing telephone surveys at the start of the project and at 3 and 9 months.
  • Use the website and increase your physical activity levels.

Can you withdraw from the study?

Participation is entirely voluntary: you are not obliged to participate and if you choose to participate you can withdraw at any time. You do not have to give a reason for withdrawing from the study and changing your mind will not affect your relationship with the researchers, other relevant research personnel, or with the universities and partner organisations conducting the research.
